All about AxCrypt and how it protects sensitive files on a computer system
As we continue to evolve in this the digital age – of advancements in computer technology, it is necessary that
awareness is heightened, especially when it comes to protecting sensitive files on our computer. These so-called “sensitive files”, are in fact files that can shed a light about the user’s identity, financial status, health, tax forms, etc…
It has been discovered that most people that make use of a computer do not take the necessary precautions to manage and protect these files and often forget about the presence of these files altogether.
Document processing, handling and management are predominantly in electronic formats these days. Therefore there are certain aspects to consider:
1. If you maintain sensitive files on your PC, keep them in one folder on your PC. For arguments’ sake, let’s call this folder “Lock Box”. Under the “Lock Box” folder you can have sub-folders that contain all the sensitive documents. For example, you may have a folder called “Tax Forms”. The reason for the “one folder” concept is that this makes management of the files easy and more manageable.
2. Routinely copy the “Lock Box” folder to a flash drive or CD/DVD. Should you use an online file storage option, I strongly encourage using encryption software.
3. Now the most important part. Encrypt your “Lock Box” folder on your PC using encryption software. There are numerous third party options out there.
One particular open source and “FREE” encryption program, called AxCrypt, is suggested to ensure the encryption takes place successfully. AxCrypt allows for the encryption of folders and files and further converts them to an “exe” (executable) file format. Files encrypted and converted into the “exe” format allows for the file to be taken anywhere; however, to open the file requires a password (a rather nifty feature).
AxCrypt is regarded by many experts as the leading open source file encryption software for Windows. AxCrypt integrates seamlessly with Windows to compress, encrypt, decrypt, store, send and work with individual files.
AxCrypt has the following features
- Right-click integration with Windows Explorer makes AxCrypt the easiest way to encrypt individual files in Windows.
- Double-click integration makes it as easy to open, edit and save encrypted files as it is to work with unencrypted files.
AxCrypt has many additional features, and what is more is AxCrypt requires no configuration, simply install it and use it.
AxCrypt encrypts files that are safely and easily sent to other users via e-mail or any other means. Self-decrypting files are also equally supported, removing the need to install AxCrypt to decrypt.
AxCrypt is translated into English, Danish, Swedish, German, Dutch, Hungarian, Spanish, French, Italian and Norwegian so chances are it speaks your preferred language.
Go get it!
