Delete Browsing History, Cookies and Forms Data in Internet Explorer
March 8, 2011 Computer Tips And Tricks
Internet Explorer is the default Internet browser for many people as it comes standard with Windows. This browser
has a slightly unique way of going about deleting things such as browsing history, cookies and other identifiable web prints.
Because IE is more integrated with Windows than other popular browsers such as Firefox or Google Chrome, it is possible to adjust your browser and internet settings within Windows instead of inside the browser itself.
When all is said and done, adjusting IE settings and getting rid of browser footprints is not that difficult. Microsoft puts all Internet Explorer settings into one convenient location which allows for even novice users to easily access and tweak the settings to desired preferences. To start, follow this path:
Start > Control Panel > Internet Options.
The Internet Properties panel is the location where you can easily adjust almost any type of Internet Explorer setting, and where you can customize IE and delete cookies and other browser marks.
To delete temporary internet files, cookies, cache, history, form data, saved passwords, InPrivate Filtering data, or any other aspect of IE’s browsing history, simply click on the Delete… button, located under the Browsing history section.
The Delete Browsing History window should now open and allow you to select each individual item that you want to clear or delete. There is also a description listed beneath each item, which will conveniently inform you of exactly what you are deleting.
The Temporary Internet Files and History Settings window allows you to configure several of Internet Explorer’s settings and preferences. You can choose whether IE should save browsing history, and how many days to store browsing history should you choose this option.
The Internet Properties home window allows you to choose to configure advanced security preferences. Simply click the Security tab to get started.
You can adjust the security level for each specific zone: Internet, Local intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted sites. By default, Windows will adjust these settings for you properly. However, should you wish to up the security level, especially if you visit some websites that may not be secure you can easily do this. To do so simply drag the slider to a higher or lower security level, or click the Custom level button to configure advanced settings for each zone.
Finally, you can adjust Privacy settings for IE. To do this you have to navigate back to the Internet Properties home screen and click the Privacy tab.
The Privacy Settings tab allows you to control which types of cookies Internet Explorer accepts, and configure the Pop-up Blocker. Adjusting cookie settings for Internet Exploere Privacy involves moving the slider to adjust general cookie settings, or clicking the Sites, Import, Advanced, or Default buttons to set specific rules for cookie handling.
The Pop-up Blocker is just as easy to configure. You should simply click to Turn on Pop-up Blocker. However, you can choose to adjust further settings, should you want to set permissions for individual websites, and customize the blocking level.
You can also set IE to not collect data for use by InPrivate Filtering and Disable toolbars and extensions when InPrivate Filtering starts.
