Does Your Computer really need Security Software?

May 25, 2009 Computer Safety Tip

The publicity over the Conficker virus has gone hand-in-hand with recommendations about how best to protect your to_question_by_todo_el_mundocomputer safe from malware, viruses and other malicious software.

The majority of us rely on some form of security software while surfing the web. However, there are experienced, knowledgeable people out there who surf the web unprotected.

Among them is blogger Rick Broida, he says that security suites are an unnecessary nuisance compared with the threat of malware.

Rick says that security software is scam, a rip-off, a waste of money and so on. For the past several years he has run Windows (first XP and now Vista) without a single byte of third-party security software. He only uses the tools which are built into Windows. He has spent no time at all on cleaning up after viruses, spyware, rootkits, Trojan horses, keyloggers and other security breaches.

His first line of defence is his router. It has a built-in firewall that blocks all unauthorised traffic and makes his network more or less invisible to the outside world.

His second life of defence is Windows. XP, Vista and Windows 7 have built-in firewalls that help protect against ‘inside’ attacks.
