Don’t Pay The Price For The PayPal Phishing Attack

April 28, 2010 Computer Safety Tip

Cybercriminals will go to any lengths to achieve their desired goals. They have done it again, except this time they are using PayPal. Cybercriminals have maliciously created a fake email which looks like it comes from PayPal although the truth of the matter is that it comes from malicious online cybercriminals. Anybody who makes use of PayPal and who has an email address need to be aware of this new phishing scam that is currently taking place on our world wide web.

The way this scam works is that you will receive an email alerting you to the factor that your account has been suspended because someone has been trying to access it but has not been able to. You will receive a message as well as an attachment. This attachment is called:”Your Account Has Been Suspended.html”.The moment that you open it up, you will see a form which asks you for your credit card details as well as for various other confidential information in order for PayPal to supposedly restore your account.

The email body will look as follows:

Message body:
“We are sorry to inform you that your PayPal Account has been suspended.
A high number of failed login attempts have been recorded on your online account.
As a security measure we had to temporarily suspend your account. To restore your account we have attached a form to this email.
Please download the form and follow the instructions on your screen”.

NOTE: The form needs to be opened in a modern, javascript enabled, browser (ex: Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3, Safari 3, Opera 9).

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Sincerely, the PayPal security team.

The email heading will appear as following:

“From: service@paypal.com
Subject: A high number of failed login attempts have been recorded on your online account”.

You need to know that everything related to this email is an attempt by malicious criminals who want to obtain your information. They have set this all up on purpose in order to take advantage of innocent victims and trick them. Do not fall for any of this and always make sure that you have decent and up to date software running on your computer system at all times. If you receive an email which doesn’t look right, trust your instincts and delete it immediately.
