Making a Live Boot CD

If you’re still having trouble in removing viruses from  your system, it may be as the files are locked or in use by the Operating System (Windows) even in Safe Mode. One way to be beat this is to create a Live CD. This is basically a CD that boots its’ own operating system to by-pass your usual Windows install running from your hard drive. When the live CD boots and loads, it means none of the processes you usually have running (including any malicious ones related to any virus) won’t be running. Use a scanning tool to find and remove infections. BartPE is worth considering, you will require technical knowledge and your original Windows XP install CD to create your own bootable BartPE CD.

Slaving your Hard Drive

If the boot CD is not for you, you can consider “slaving” the problematic hard drive. This means removing the hard drive containing Windows from your infected PC, placing it within a “caddy” (an external holder for the drive) and connecting it to a healthy PC via USB and then running the various scanning programs on it.

To know which type of caddy you will need, you need to know what type of hard drive you have:

Size – if you have a “normal” sized desktop PC, your hard drive should be 3.5 inches. If you have a laptop, it will be 2.5 inches.
Connection Type – Newer PC’s and laptops will have SATA connections, older one will have IDE connections.
