To protect your PC from threats you will need the functionality of 3 main components (plus the 4th of a “safe 
browser):
1. Antivirus – to keep viruses away with real time protection.
2. Firewall – to monitor and block network based attacks.
3. Web Browser – Must be fast and secure.
A basic suggestion for utilities you can try:
1. Antivirus – Avast 4 Home Edition
2. Firewall – ZoneAlarm 7
3. Antispyware – Windows Defender
4. Browser – FireFox 3
If you have an intensely low speed PC (e.g. old, slow processor, low RAM) adding this extra protection may slow it down even more. The minimum recommended would be antivirus protection, plus Windows Firewall turned on (part of Windows itself) and spyware protection.
