Google Chrome launches its own Operating System

May 24, 2010 Computer News

Since its launch 9 months ago, Google Chrome Browser has come a long way, and has grown in popularity and tolled in the success in leaps and bounds.

Google Chrome was designed for those computer users who practically live on the World Wide Web. In other words, Google Chrome is specially tailored for those individuals who regularly search for information, check their emails, catch up on the news, enjoy online shopping or simply stay in touch with friends.

That being said, it has come to the attention of Google Chrome Browser’s manufacturers that not all Operating Systems are fully compatible with the advanced settings embedded within Google Chrome Browser, this is why Google’s new project is actually just a natural extension of the Google Chrome project, taking into account all the features users will want and need from a fully functional operating system.

The designers of Google Chrome OS are aiming for a light weight and open source Operating System, which they say will be integrated into NetBooks, initially. It has been confirmed that later on in the year, Google Chrome OS will open-source its code and that NetBooks running the Google Chrome OS will be available to purchase from stores towards the second half of 2010.

According to its makers, Google Chrome OS has a few key aspects:

  • Speed
  • Simplicity
  • Security

As is mentioned by its’ creators: “We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.”

Google Chrome designers have taken into account what PC users are requesting as a means to better their computing experience.

Users have shown that they want the following:

  • Computers need to get better
  • Users want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up.
  • Users want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them.
  • Users want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files.
  • Users don’t want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware
  • Users don’t want to have to worry about constant software updates.

It is a of general consensus by all at the Google Chrome head-quarters that any time their users have a better computing experience, Google benefits as well by having happier users who are more likely to spend more time on the Internet.

The ergonomics of Google Chrome OS is such that it will be able to run on both x86 as well as ARM chips. It has been shown that the software architecture of Google Chrome OS is simple, namely: Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. Important to note, for application developers, Google Chrome OS uses the web as a platform. Meaning that all web-based applications will automatically work and new applications will able to be written using your favorite web technologies.

Google Chrome OS’s Developers assure users that these applications will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standard-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux, thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.
Important to note here – is the fact that Google chrome OS is an entirely different project to the Google Android project.

The difference between each project is highlighted by its manufacturers: “Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to NetBooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small NetBooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.”

Google Chrome OS’s designers are the first to admit that there is still a lot of work to be done, before their product will be completely flawless – however, they believe to be on the right track – and their early press releases show just that. I reckon it is quite plain to see that Google is fast becoming even more of a force to be reckoned with!
