How to search by Voice in Google Chrome

September 9, 2011 Computer Tips And Tricks

Most smart phones come with a fantastic voice command capability, but our PCs have been slow on the up take. Windows offers a built in voice recognition command, but it certainly leaves a lot to be desired, and does not work well with all programs and Internet browsers. We have now found a Voice Search extension which works specifically well for searching the Internet in Chrome with vocal commands.

Go to Chrome’s Extensions Page. Once there, search for the Voice Search extension. Click on the blue Install button. A pop up message will now appear asking you to confirm the installation. Click on install.

After a few seconds passes, the extension will install. A small microphone will now appear to the right of the Chrome Web address bar, adjacent to the tool box icon.

Click the microphone icon, and then say the search term you are looking for. The extension will by default search Google. To change this, simply click on the microphone, and then the down arrow. A list of possible search engines and web sites will appear. You can now choose the one you want.

You may find that the Voice Search extension may not work at first. This is easily remedied. Alter the Chrome target to enable voice recognition. Do this by pressing shift+right click on your Chrome icon, and then choose properties. Select Target in the dropdown list. Now directly after the .exe, type enable-speech-input, and click Apply.

This should solve your and problem enable you to use the extension without any more problems. At the end of the day the extension is not that much of a quick fix as expected of an extension, but once properly tweaked the voice recognition in Chrome works very well.
