Increase Security in Windows 7

December 13, 2011 Computer Safety Tip

Even though enabling separate Windows 7 accounts can increase security, there are several obstacles to overcome when many different user accounts are used on the same PC. The most important is that more than once account means that a hacker has more opportunities to gain unauthorized access to the PC and the server.

A great way to counteract this threat is to enable certain account policies, which will in effect limit a hacker’s ability to gain access to a user’s account. This remains one of the most powerful ways to stave of thieves, hackers and other people out to wreak havoc on your files, personal info and other important, sensitive, personal information.

Why should you enable Lockout Policies?

This will prevent the unauthorized use of anyone’s Windows 7 account. Naturally it will not completely thwart unauthorized access but it goes a long way to securing the PC against someone who constantly enters password after password to gain access to someone else’s account.

In a work situation, colleagues oftentimes share account info including usernames and passwords. This means that at times one employee can try to gain access to another employee’s account by guessing the password. Many social engineers will try to gain as much info about a user’s password in an effort to make a successful intelligent guess as to the different combinations of the password. These and many other reasons justify the implementation of lockout policies on your PC.
