Look out for fake reviews & fake security scans

June 1, 2009 Computer Safety Tip

It was reported last month that the developer of the supposed antivirus products called Antivirus System Pro and vista_anti_spyware_icon_by_hiero_nymusSystem Security were convincing users to install the software, which then led them to fake sites that use web addresses similar to the URLs of legitimate websites such as PC Advisor.

When Antivirus System Pro or System Security was installed, they added a series of entries into the Windows hosts file which directed the users to fake reviews on copycat sites.

All computer security sites are now warning users about a new variation called Antivirus System Pro. This uses exactly the same technique as its predecessors. The tech website has disclosed a few more details of how is convinces those who download it that it’s a legit antivirus software.

The site had this to say: Once installed, Antivirus System Pro will be configured to run when Windows starts. The software then scans your computer and displays scan results that are scripted to be the same regardless of the computer it runs on. Whatever Antivirus System Pro shows during its scans should be ignored as the program was designed to always show those results no matter how clean your computer is. It does this to scare you into thinking you are infected in the hope that you may purchase the program.

Some of these alerts include ‘Internal conflict alert’ and ‘Privacy Violation alert!’

There are alot of scareware tools being distributed across the web, so be cautious of the antivirus or antispyware products you have not heard of before. Do a search on Google to check up on the company providing the software and, if you are not sure, use the PC Advisor forums to see which security tools others users are happy with.
