Mikogo: a free remote PC access and remote control softwar

August 11, 2009 Software Review

Mikogo is a free screen-sharing and remote control application, whcih is compatible with both Mac and PC. This application is mature in terms of the GUI interface and the feature set.smile_by_wylf
Overall, Mikogo is a very simple to use program.

In order to share a screen, one would need to first download the software and register for a free account.

Important to note – people you invite to view your screen will not have register for accounts.

Some of the main features of the Mikogo remote PC access and control application includes:

•    Shares your desktop screen with multiple people at the same time
•    Immediately switches presenters and allows them to share their screen
•    Remote control of another PC
•    File transfers between participants
•    Recoding of sessions with playback
•    Whiteboards for all participants to collaborate
•    256-bit AES encryption for security
•    Video conferencing service

Once the program is installed, one will be abel to see a new “m” icon in thetaskbar.

To start a new meeting, simply click on the icon and choose Start Meeting.

After that, a Meeting Info dialog will appear, containing all the necessary information for people to join the meeting, namely the Meeting ID.

For someone to join a meeting, they will have to go to Mikogo.com and click on the Join Meeting link (situated at the upper right corner of the website).

They will then need to download the EXE file and a login screen will appear asking for their name and the Meeting ID.

While in a meeting, the menu for the icon in the system tray will change so that one can use all the other features of Mikogo (like the Whiteboard, switching presenters, remote control, sending files, and more.)

Anther cool feature of Mikogo is the Pause Transmission option.

for thsoe situations when in the middle of a meeting and all of a sudden a very important email comes through. Well, instead of closing the whole session so that no one will see what you are doing, pausing the transmission will suspend transmission of the screen to others.

Another cool feature is the Application Selection option.

This allows for the user to choose which application they want to share with others and which ones should be kept hidden. Again, most screen sharing applications will simply share your entire desktop and everyone will be abel to view all the programs you have open, etc.

With application selection, one can only share the application that is relevant to the other viewers and everything else will appear blank to the viewers.

Overall, Mikogo has a lot of cool features and it works with Macs and with external programs like Skype, if you need high quality audio also. So definitely check out Mikogo (http://www.mikogo.com/en/ ) if you are intersted in screen-sharing and remote control apps!
