More on Portable Ubuntu – for Windows Xp and Windows Vista
What is Portable Ubuntu?
Well, it is Ubuntu system running as a Windows application. This system appears to have been built with the Colinux Kernel, Xming X server and Pulseaudio server for Windows.
The Portable Ubuntu tends to run directly from the thumb drive, and can be used as a standard Operating System with which one can install and use Ubuntu programs and manipulate various files.
The interface of Portable Ubuntu is that of a standard orange GNOME based and can be downloaded and distributed freely.

Important to note: the file size is 438MB, so downloading may take a while – be prepared for the wait, it is worth it!
To install and use Portable Ubuntu on Windows XP, one needs to follow the instructions listed below:
- Double-click the downloaded portable Ubuntu file, select a location that the archive should be extracted to, and then uncompress the archive by clicking the extract button.
- Once the archive file has been uncompressed, you should be able to see a folder called ‘Portable Ubuntu’, go to this folder.
- To start Portable Ubuntu, right-click bat file named run_portable_ubuntu.bat and select open (If you are using the Windows firewall, you might have to unblock two or three applications that are needed to run Portable Ubuntu).
You should now see Portable Ubuntu start up.

Important note: Once you have installed Portable Ubuntu, the default Username is: pubuntu and the default Password is: 123456.
