Partition and Format a Drive in OS X

It has recently been brought to everyone’s attention that partitioning as well as formatting drives in the OS X is much different in comparison to that of Windows. According to many researchers the concepts are similar. The important aspect to bear in mind is that Apple’s Disk Utility application actually ships with OS X and it is in fact very simple yet powerful at the same time. You are able to gain a great deal of control over the disks which you currently have.
Partitioning a Disk

You will need to connect to the specific Mac drive. If you are making use of an internal drive then it is advisable for you to follow the instructions of Apple, which are geared towards installing it in your computer machine. If you are making use of an external USB or Firewire hard drive then you will need to plug the drive into a specific port in order to power it up.

  1. You will be required to launch the Disk Utility application if it has not been launched originally.
  2. You will need to select the disk that you wish to partition from the list. This list is situated in the left panel. You will then need to click on the specific partition button. The current partition information, if there is any, will appear in the right pane of the window.
  3. Choose the Volume Scheme from the drop-down menu in the right pane of the screen. If you choose to create multiple partitions, you can resize the partitions by dragging the divider between them on the screen, or clicking on an individual partition and entering the size in the Size field.
  4. You will be required to enter the name of each partition. You will need to choose from the specific format from the drop down menu.

Formatting a Disk

  1. You need to select the partition that you wish to format from the list of partitions available.
  2. Proceed to click the erase button.
  3. You will now be given additional erase options and it is within your best interest to choose the option which best meets your individual needs.
  4. When you are content you will then need to proceed to click the erase button.. OS X will un-mount the partition and performs the erase actions you selected. When it is done, it will re-mount the partition.
  5. You are able to now proceed to repeat steps 1 to step 4 in order to erase any additional partitions which you may have on your computer system.
