Spyware and why it is so very necessary to perform regular system scans…

April 11, 2010 Computer Safety Tip

Spyware is any form of computer software that is installed covertly onto a personal computer, so as to intercept or take partial control over the user’s system, and their interaction with the computer, all done without the user’s informed consent or knowledge.

While the term spyware generally suggests the presence of software that secretly monitors the user’s behavior, the actual function of spyware tends to extend well beyond simple system monitoring.

Spyware programs can collect all sorts of personal information fort eh system user. For example: Internet surfing habits (via sites that have been visited prior), can interfere with user control of the computer (by installing additional software), is capable of redirecting Web browser activity, accessing websites blindly that will cause more harmful viruses, or diverting advertising revenue to a third party.  All of the processes above are performed in perfect stealth, this way the user will never know that the spyware is in fact jeopardizing the integrity of the system.

Spyware can even change computer settings, resulting in slow connection speeds, different home pages, and of course a loss of Internet or other programs. In an attempt to increase the understanding of spyware, a more formal classification of its included software types is captured under the term privacy-invasive software.

The best way to combat any form of spyware, is to conduct regular system scans, with a reputable and trusted anti-spyware program. I have come across many different applications, claiming to be legitimate anti-spyware programs, some of which were justified, whilst many of them were purely fake!

Your best bet would be to check out a fully functional and legitimate anti-spyware application, and ensure it does a full system scan of your PC…

Upon release of system scan your results, you should also be given step-by-step instructions on how to combat any spyware embedded on your system. You have the option of manually removing all parasites as well – making for computer safety as its optimum!

Spyware – being any form of technology that assists in gathering information about a person or organization without their knowledge (covertly). On the Internet (where it is sometimes called a spybot or tracking software), spyware is programming that is put in someone’s computer to secretly gather information about the user and relay it to advertisers or other interested parties.
