This is how you can improve Remote Desktop Protocol Performance
July 22, 2011 Computer Tips And Tricks
Many PC owners make use of Remote Desktops to access their Windows Desktops each day. This trend has been going on for a
long time, but still many users neglect to investigate the settings in the Remote Desktop Client. Tweaking these settings can customize the Client and improve your overall experience when working remotely.
This especially applies with connections established via a VPN connection, Internet or busy Terminal Server. Additionally, connections to Terminal Services from older WYSE terminals will also be substantially improved.
If you have ever experienced drastic typing delays, then this is for you!
- Launch the Remote Desktop Client. With Windows 7, press the Windows key on your keyboard and start typing Remote Desktop, and press enter. It is also listed under Programs > Accessories.
- Under the Display tab, tune the Color Depth down to 15 or 26-bit, whichever you prefer. Remember that the lower the color settings are set to, the faster the connection will be.
- Under the Local Resources tab, un-check the Printers and set Audio to “Do not Play”. Should you find yourself in need of these features, then skip the above step altogether.
- Under the Experiences tab, you can un-check all options except the Bitmap caching. All other options will use up unnecessary bandwidth, and offer inadequate benefits for most users using the Remote Desktop feature. This may be the single most important step to change, as aspects such as Themes can up to quadruple bandwidth consumption under the correct circumstances.
- Under the General tab enter the destination computer name, and choose Connect as usual.
Now enjoy your much faster and less frustrating connection! Remember that these settings apply also to WYSE terminals, but the route to follow to get them is different. You can follow the same route for your Mac should you be using the Remote Desktop Connection for Mac.
