To deal with the “Unmountable Boot Volume in Windows XP” error when starting Windows XP, you will need to have
your Windows XP install CD. Follow these steps:
1. Boot your system from the Windows XP CD.
2. Hit “R” at the “Welcome to Setup” screen.
3. Type “chkdsk/p” at the prompt (no quotes) to run a check disk on the drive. You can run the longer “chkdsk/r” (r=repair) if you have problems with the first method.
4. When the check disk in finished at the prompt, type “fixboot” (no quotes) and press enter. Enter “Y” for “Yes” when prompted.
5. At the next prompt type “Exit” (no quotes) and the system will boot into Windows.
