Updating Microsoft Windows without an Internet connection
January 3, 2012 Computer Tips And Tricks
There are still users that use a dialup internet connection, but not by choice. Broadband service is simply unavailable, not even to
talk about 3G or 4G, or a satellite connection that is too expensive and sketchy at best depending on the location and environment. What these people run into is due to the deal up speeds in their remote locations not even being up to standard. If you are already using a slow dialup connection and you have your updates set to auto update, when those updates kick in the connection speed will slow down even more. Add to that the security software updates and the general updates and you will not even be able to use the dial up internet at all.
To circumvent this problem, and still get your Windows updates, use the program called WSUS Offline Update. You will need someone with a broadband connection though, and who is willing to use the WSUS Offline Update software on their system. You will then also need to know what operating system you are using, be it Windows 7, Vista or XP.
With the WSUS Offline Update there are two components to the software. One is the “Generator” interface that will allow the user to choose the language and Operating System they are using for updates. You will even be able to inform the Generator to copy all updates to a flash drive, which you can then use to update the target PC.
When downloading the updates, a command sole window should be generated and the user will see the software going to work in order to pull down the updates. Don’t stress if the first time this process runs it takes a while. A long time can be an hour to several, but the process will work faster in future.
The second component that is built into WSUS Offline Update is the ‘Installer’ that you will need to use on the target computer. In order to start up the installer, look for the file “Updateinstaller.exe” and double click on it. The Installer will now load a GUI and will initiate numerous selections to assist you through the update process.
There are other ways to download the Windows Updates, however WSUS Offline Update is one of the best utilities available out there.
