Windows 8 details: New Features, UI enhancements and more

Steven Sinofsky, of Windows Division prexy recently revealed various tweaks of Microsoft’s latest OS, Windows 8. The new operating system implements familiar keyboard commands and also new features. It has an update for Internet Explorer, and they have also imbued its tenth iteration with the ability to switch between Metro style UI and the plain old Desktop view. There are various other sweeping changes across the platform, and you can have a look at those here:

  • Don’t worry, all Windows 7 applications will run on Windows 8
  • Security update notifications have been minimized to the lower right of the log in screen
  • All refreshed Windows Task Managers will suspect apps when they are not running on the screen
  • There is a “Reset and Refresh PC” function which enables simplified system swipe and restore
  • HyperV virtualization software will come pre loaded on Windows 8
  • Multi0monitor support is enabled for Internet Explorer 10
  • Magnifier function will enhance the desktop operation
  • Built-in antivirus software will ship with Windows 8
  • There won’t be a different edition of Windows 8 for tablets or Media Centers either
  • It’s not yet clear how many versions of Windows /8 there will be, i.e. Windows 8 Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc.
  • ARM devices will be supported, but not in the developer preview
  • There won’t be any overlays with Windows 8, Metro Style
  • Optional thumb by thumb input mode
  • Settings that will allow for preferences to sync across a user’s Windows 8 devices
  • Continued update support for Windows 8 Developer Preview Beta
  • Logins will also use a photo based system
