Wireless Networks: to do or not to do?

March 15, 2010 Computer News

In this the digital era, of mass production on all things wireless, one is led to believe that this is the answer to all cable woes – and that with wireless networks one can never go wrong.

Well, as with all things in life – there is always a flip side, the advantages and the disadvantages. In my opinion it is best to know all sides of a story, this way making the most informed and knowledgeable decision about how to progress forward.

When one take to the internet and does some research on possible Wi-Fi disadvantages, one can see that there are a few devices which may cause terminal interferences in Wi-Fi connections, making them obsolete and inoperable.

There are many devices which interfere with the functionality of Wi-Fi connections, the more common being: Bluetooth devices, microwave ovens, and cordless phones.

As one researches more, one can clearly see that a clear disadvantage of a wireless connection is the fact that someone, within the wireless traffic, could very possibly hack into the Wi-Fi connection. The best way to combat this would be to make use of some form of wireless security, this way ensuring private information remains safe ad intact, not being able to be viewed by unauthorized eyes.

One could very easily install a solid firewall, to ensure that these type hackers do not infiltrate your wireless connection.

Wireless technology comes in various shapes and forms. One can find any kind of wireless device these days, from wireless speakers for your stereo system, to wireless headphones, wireless receivers and transmitters and even wireless microphones.

One can also find all sorts of wireless hardware for your computing pleasure, namely: wireless computer mice, keyboards, satellite TV, cordless telephones and even garage door openers.

It seems in lieu of the above that the world as we know it is fast moving towards the wireless state of affairs, leaving all hardwire devices as a near distant past – reminiscent of days gone by…

As is mentioned by a technology forecaster, the age of technology is fast ushering the wireless stance:

“As wireless Internet technology advances, personal digital assistants, blackberry devices, and other cell phones or PC hybrids will likely rely increasingly on non-fiber based transmissions. Thus by educating yourself now about wireless Internet trends and developing initiatives, you can easily position yourself as a first adopter of the next generation of Wi-Fi related technologies. Understanding what’s at the cutting edge of telecom tech development can also enrich your overall investment portfolio.”

All in all one can clearly see that whether one opts for the wireless route (which let’s face it is much less cumbersome…) – or whether one chooses to remain steadfast with hardwire devices, the issue of security and computer safety is still foremost – and prevalent!
