You Won’t Win With The World Cup Lotto Scam

May 26, 2010 Computer Safety Tip

It has recently been discovered by the Better Business Bureau that online lotto World Cup soccer scams are taking place. This particular scam comes in the specific form of an email that actually invites people to be a part of a lottery which is sponsored by the Word Cup organization called Fifa. This is of course one big scam even though it may seem authentic and convincing to many computer users out there.

Lynda Pasacreta, president and CEO of the BBB in British Columbia states:”They use the word FIFA, they throw in words that make you feel a little bit more comfortable, and that’s the word of the Canadian government. And then you’re giving away some identity theft information,”

Some people have gone as far as calling the BBB in order to see what is going on and where their prize is. These particular individuals said that they got an email with a certain PDF attachment. It is said that this particular PDF is meant to contain details with regard to the prize. Of course this is yet another big scam and online users need to be aware of any related lottery world cup emails which they may receive in their inbox. There unfortunately is also the risk of obtaining the other version of the scam where once you open up the PDF your computer will get infected with various malicious malware and parasites.

“Just by opening that you’ve got a real concern that you can expose your computer to malware viruses, and it can also lead to identity theft. So these are getting kind of nasty,” Pasacreta said in an interview with CBC News. This trick is geared towards obtaining peoples personal information which may include banking details and other financial information which will aid cybercriminals in committing identity theft.

If you respond to one of these emails you may go onto a list of people that malicious marketers use to buy and sell. At the end of the day you have not won anything and you are not going to win anything. It is advised that all computer users who receive these lotto emails should delete it immediately and never open any attachments under any circumstances.
